Penultimate week

With just one more full week to go until Christmas holidays, year 5 have been particularly busy preparing for their pantomime performance. The script was written by the children and their first performance yesterday was a great success. Creating and rehearsing this has meant that all literacy lessons this week and even some maths ones have been replaced with pantomime preparations. In addition to this they have learned about rounding numbers in maths and have also been practicing their African drumming, ready for another performance next week. We will have a new member of the class joining us from Monday and everyone is looking forward to a fun final week!

Reform of the year 5 blog

Hello,

at the beginning of this school year the children were put in charge of writing the class blog. Unfortunately this has proved to be too impractical to continue due to the level of support required by most and restrictions in availability of both equipment and time. Because of these factors I will now take responsibility for writing here - Mr Brown.

Over the last few weeks we have been looking at myths, legends and fairytales in literacy, multiplication and division in maths and Mozambique for topic. The end of the last topic saw year 5 build wooden models (with some adult help) so that we could recreate the famous Viking raid on Lindisfarne in AD 793. The models suffered the same fate as the original buildings of the time - they were burned!

For our main topic this term we are building towards a performance to which parents will be invited (details will follow in a newsletter nearer the time) combining African drumming and the telling of an African folk tale. We are currently planning to perform at 11:00 on Wednesday 14th December.

At the same time we are planning and rehearsing our pantomime to be performed in the last week of term. Year 5 are doing a performance of Beauty and the Beast and the children are currently writing scripts and thinking about stage directions and props.

We hope you enjoy the highlights from the end of last term!

Wednesday 15th June

We have had a very fun week this week!

On Monday we started doing instrustions in English. We had to draw a picture and then we had to use instructions to explain to our partner how to draw the picture. We got lots of different results!

On Tuesday we got to go Ashton Park school to see what it was like. We did four different subjects, they were: Spanish, Science, D.T and Maths. In spanish we got to go on the computers and play on spanish games. In D.T we made our own Keyrings. In maths and science we had to do 30 puzzles and at the end it made a word. It was very tricky. We all had a brilliant day.

On Wednesday in English we did some more instructions. We had to get some multilink blocks and make a model and then we had to give our partner instructions on how to make it.In science we had a lump of plastercine and a bowl of water. We had to make a shape with the plastercine, weigh it and then we had to drop into the water and see if it would sink or float.

On Thursday we did some more Probabilityin maths. We had to get with a partner and we had to write 5 statements each. Then we had to draw a line in our books and put where we think each statement would go. We could put it on Impossible, Uncertain, Possible, Good chance and Certain.

On Friday we had a very busy day. Four different teachers came in to apply for a job at our school. We did Place Value with each teacher. We have had a brilliant week and we look forward to seeing who gets to be the new teacher.

P.S Get well soon Mr Mackie! x x
