Beginning of term 5

Spring has finally arrived and term 5 has begun! To start with we will be allocating class jobs, talking and writing about what we did over the holidays and generally getting back into gear. For literacy we have a new book we will be starting, "Stormbreaker", an Alex Rider adventure by Anthony Horowitz.
The high-tech theme of Stormbreaker complements our new topic for the term, electricity. We will be learning about building basic circuits and learning a bit more about what electricity actually is and how we use it.
In maths we are doing a range of problem solving activities and investigations where the children have the chance to apply what they've learned to solve puzzles. Times tables and spelling tests will continue as normal and for our maps we will be looking at Asia this term - probably the hardest continent to get to grips with.
Sadly our time with drums and ukuleles is over but we will still be working alongside Bristol City FC to learn about healthy living and sportsman-like behaviour.

January 20th 2012

Year 5 have started doing some experiments for their science topic and have been learning about saturation, dissolving and melting. In maths we have been looking at column subtraction and the children have been making wonderful progress. For literacy we have been writing learning about instructions, both written and verbal. In P.E. we have started using climbing apparatus and the children will be developing their balancing skills next week.

Perhaps the most exciting new thing this year has been the start of ukulele lessons. I will be taking part in the lesson next week for the first time and am looking forward to seeing what they have learned so far.

A highlight of last week was having a salsa dance teacher come in for a one-off lesson last week and this week the children are very much looking forward to going to see Bristol City for free as a reward for their great work in their football training sessions!

Happy 2012!

The first week back was shorter than normal and we spent some of that time talking and writing about what we'd done over the holidays.

In literacy the children have been finishing off last term's learning about myths and today they wrote their own myths.

In numeracy they have been continuing to work on properties of shapes, rounding numbers up and down and also doubling.

Another exciting development was the delivery of ukuleles and the collection of the African drums. The children greatly enjoyed drumming and we are all hoping ukuleles will prove to be just as much fun!

Penultimate week

With just one more full week to go until Christmas holidays, year 5 have been particularly busy preparing for their pantomime performance. The script was written by the children and their first performance yesterday was a great success. Creating and rehearsing this has meant that all literacy lessons this week and even some maths ones have been replaced with pantomime preparations. In addition to this they have learned about rounding numbers in maths and have also been practicing their African drumming, ready for another performance next week. We will have a new member of the class joining us from Monday and everyone is looking forward to a fun final week!

Reform of the year 5 blog

Hello,

at the beginning of this school year the children were put in charge of writing the class blog. Unfortunately this has proved to be too impractical to continue due to the level of support required by most and restrictions in availability of both equipment and time. Because of these factors I will now take responsibility for writing here - Mr Brown.

Over the last few weeks we have been looking at myths, legends and fairytales in literacy, multiplication and division in maths and Mozambique for topic. The end of the last topic saw year 5 build wooden models (with some adult help) so that we could recreate the famous Viking raid on Lindisfarne in AD 793. The models suffered the same fate as the original buildings of the time - they were burned!

For our main topic this term we are building towards a performance to which parents will be invited (details will follow in a newsletter nearer the time) combining African drumming and the telling of an African folk tale. We are currently planning to perform at 11:00 on Wednesday 14th December.

At the same time we are planning and rehearsing our pantomime to be performed in the last week of term. Year 5 are doing a performance of Beauty and the Beast and the children are currently writing scripts and thinking about stage directions and props.

We hope you enjoy the highlights from the end of last term!
